Sir, Deo's editorial in August 2009 issue reignited the debate on undergraduate medical research (1). The teaching in medical colleges is mostly static with little or no emphasis on practical knowledge and research. While medicine and biomedicine are expanding exponentially, the process of incorporating it in teaching curricula is sluggish resulting in an ever-increasing gap between what is known and what is taught adversely affecting research. This may be the reason why published research output from South Asia is small-South Asian health researchers accounted for only 1.2 per cent of all papers within the Institute for Scientific Information database from 1992-2001 (2).
